A YOUNG cager from the University of Santo Tomas died of electrocution after saving two children in a swimming pool accident in Tuguegarao City last Saturday night.
John Lee Apil, a nephew of Barangay Ginebra star Romel Adducul, will be laid to rest on April 25 in his hometown in Solana, Tuguegarao. He was the only child of Charles Apil and Ines Abig.
The 21-year-old Apil, a first year commerce student in the physical education and athletic department, debuted with the Tigers in the last University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season.
Details of the accident were sketchy.
"He was a promising player," said former UST coach Nel Parado, who recruited Apil from St. Paul University in Tuguegarao. "When he played, he reminded us of (former UST star) Dale Singson."
Apil, a 6-foot guard, suited up for six games last season. Although he played only limited minutes on his first year, Parado credited Apil for his hard work.
"It was his birthday (Sept. 3) when he played his best game for UST," recalled Parado. "He didn't score much but he contributed in assists and we defeated Ateneo in the second round."
The UST community has been offering masses and tributes for Apil.
